Built Around You

Residency: October 2012
Exhibition: 27 October – 2 November 2012

BUILT AROUND YOU was an artist residency, exhibition and events programme co-curated with Newcastle-based arts organisation ‘Situation Rhubarb’ (Hannah Marsden and Sheila Gonzalez).
The entire project was hosted within an uninhabited terraced house in the Newcastle suburb of Heaton. The programme intended to create dialogue around the transient nature of urban living (especially for young people) due to rising rents and house prices. For the project three emerging artists (plus myself) were invited to create new works responding to the architecture of the property, the concept of ‘home’, memory and traces left behind.

My role within the project was two-fold, both as a Co-Curator involved in all areas of management of the project and its delivery and as a participating artist. Two new works were created for the exhibition – Nesting Grounds’ and ‘Nesting Negatives’ through which I created shoji paper models (from memory) of each house I had lived in during my time in Newcastle.

The project was made possible with the generous support of Arts Council England and Newcastle City Council.
